D. Elaine (Mitchell) Maskenthine, age 92, died at Sunrise of Bothell, Bothell, Wash., on December 7, 2016.

Elaine was born on September 24, 1924, in Livingston, MT to Herschel and Dora Mitchell. Her family household included an older brother, Hugh Mitchell, and younger sister Wanda Zoe (Mitchell) Swegle.

Before moving to Spokane, which was home during most of her youth, Elaine also lived in Seattle and Oroville. After graduating from North Central High School (Spokane), she attended Washington State College (now WSU) and Eastern Washington College (now EWU), where she earned her BA in Education.

Elaine's first teaching job took her to Davenport, Wash., where she met Lloyd Maskenthine. They were married on January 1, 1948. They made their first home on Bainbridge Island, but soon moved back to eastern Washington when the opportunity came for Lloyd to supervise Riverside State Park (Spokane). While living at the park, their daughters, Janet and Susan, were born. Elaine and Lloyd joined Pilgrim Lutheran Church and enjoyed the friendships and fellowship with that congregation for many years. In 1959, the family moved back to Davenport and Elaine once again took up teaching 2nd graders, continuing in that role for 21 years.

Claiming that she had "itchy" feet, after retirement, Elaine and Lloyd traveled extensively in their pickup/camper including trips to Alaska and trans-Canada to Nova Scotia. In 1984 Elaine traveled with daughter, Susan, to Kenya and Israel.

Elaine was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church (Davenport, Wash.), serving as choir director for many years. She also enjoyed her friendships and activities as a long-time member of the Davenport Study Club. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Kappa Delta Pi, professional honor societies for women educators.

Music was Elaine's passion. She was an accomplished vocalist, enjoying solo and choir work throughout her life. She also was a violinist and spent countless hours rehearsing and performing with the Lincoln Strings Ensemble.

Elaine is survived by her two daughters and their husbands: Janet and Terry Ray of Bothell, and Susan and Rick Hegstrom of Denver, CO. She has four grandchildren and five great grandchildren: Brandon Ray and wife Gretchen (Zoe and Kian), Katrina Ray Hopkins and husband Sean (Taylor Jo), Bo Hegstrom (Hunter and Jaxon), and Curt Hegstrom and wife Sarah. She is also survived by her brother, Hugh Mitchell, Honolulu, HI and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Lloyd.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on June 10, 2017, at Zion Lutheran Church in Davenport, Wash. at 1PM
