On Thursday, March 9, 2017, Donald Mark Brown, age 90, was carried home to Jesus. He was born August 7, 1926 in Trenton, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his wife, of 61 years, Helen (Garner), his brother, Robert H Brown and his parents, Frank and Ethel (Huntsberry) Brown.
Donald graduated from High School in Vergennes, Illinois in 1944. He was drafted into service for his country on January 5, 1945 during the height of World War II. He was trained as a tank gunner and was in route to invade Japan when the bombs were dropped. His ship was diverted to the Philippines and his position changed to serving the occupation forces in Manila where he served under General MacArthur. Donald served his country overseas and on the home front as a full-time member of the Armed Forces and as a reservist. He left honorably as a Staff Sargent in 1960. He was very humble about his time served and didn't begin to tell his stories until late in life.
Donald loved the Lord and was passionate about the Methodist Church. As a preacher's kid, he liked to share about his father's (Brown / Massey) travels to Washington State from Illinois where they helped to establish the Methodist Church in Des Moines, WA in 1888. The family returned to Illinois at the turn of the last century.
Five generations of Donald's family attended McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois, where he graduated in 1950.
Donald is survived by his two children Mark (Kathy) Brown, Debbie (Brian) Roberts-Felix, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, March 18th at 3pm at Purdy and Walters at Floral Hills, 409 Filbert Road, Lynnwood, WA 98036-4934.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Robert H Brown, Memorial Scholarship Fund, McKendree University, 701 College Road, Lebanon, Illinois 62254.
